Nusa Penida Snorkeling: What to Expect

The four main sites, manta realities, currents and how to plan the day from Sanur.

Nusa Penida Snorkeling: What to Expect

Nusa Penida day trips leave Sanur early — around 07:00 — and run four sites on the island's coast: Manta Point, Gamat Bay, Crystal Bay and Wall Point.

About the mantas

Manta Point is a natural cleaning station where reef mantas come in to be cleaned by wrasse. Sightings are frequent but never guaranteed. Any operator promising a guaranteed sighting is overselling.

Currents

The channel between Bali and Penida moves water fast. Currents at Manta Point and Gamat Bay can be strong, and a good guide stays in the water with the group and will change the site order or skip a site outright when conditions demand it.

Season and visibility

April to November is the better window for both visibility and the boat crossing. In the wet season the crossing can be rough.

What to bring

Reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard, a dry bag, and motion sickness tablets if you are prone to it. The fast boat crossing is quick but bumpy.
